Maine.gov DataShare provides easy access to public data to increase government transparency and encourage public participation and collaboration in government.
DataShare provides a catalog of public data that includes access to “raw” data in CSV (comma-separated) and/or KML formats. Datasets are searchable by category, agency, and keywords.
Once in the catalog, click on the name of the dataset and you will be taken to a page with more details and meta-data for that specific dataset or tool.
Maine’s Chief Information Officer, Richard Thompson, announced today that the award-winning state website, Maine.gov, has been enhanced to provide greater access to government information for citizen and businesses.
Maine.gov is the official website of the State of Maine, offering interactive online services, news, alerts, mapping, links to state and local government information, search and help functions, and Web 2.0 tools such as RSS, Facebook and Twitter. Recent updates to the site include:
- A new mobile Maine.gov for smartphone devices such as the iPhone and Android, providing on-the-go access to agency directories, maps of nearby government facilities, 511 travel data, polling places, lottery numbers, and news. Citizens can simply point their mobile browser to http://www.Maine.gov.
- The Maine.gov Media Gallery now includes live streaming video and audio as well as recorded media. All audio and video in the Media Gallery is closed captioned for accessibility to the disabled. This new service on Maine.gov will allow state government to schedule and stream live meetings online for public viewing.
- Maine’s open data service, DataShare, has been enhanced with new data sets, navigation features such as most popular data sets, RSS feeds, and Twitter for notification of data updates. DataShare provides free, downloadable data for public use.
“Maine.gov provides online access to public government information in a way that is both innovative and easy-to-use,” commented Richard Thompson, the state’s Chief Information Officer. “The Internet is an efficient and effective means of service delivery, saving time for Maine citizens and businesses. These new enhancements to Maine.gov increase government transparency and the ability for citizens to engage in the policymaking process.”
In addition to these new features, Maine.gov provides access to more than 450 online government services, including vehicle registration renewal, professional license renewal, hunting and fishing licenses, traffic ticket payments, business tax registration, and more.
The Maine.gov website has been nationally recognized for excellence several times in recent years, including ranking first in the nation in 2009 in a study by Rutgers University, and fourth in the nation in the 2009 competition for best state government Web portal by the Center for Digital Government.
